About Our Allotment Community
Nestled between back gardens and the open countryside, our allotment association is a shared green space where neighbours grow food, friendships, and a stronger local community. Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just curious about how tomatoes really grow.
Our Story & Mission
Our association was founded many years ago, turning an unused patch of land into something beautiful and useful. Over the years, new paths were laid, sheds were built, and hedges were planted, all by volunteers with muddy boots and big ideas.
Today, our mission is simple: to provide affordable growing space for local people, to protect and improve this piece of green space for future generations, and to share skills, seeds, and harvests so that no one has to learn gardening alone.
Our Community Values
- Sustainability – We garden with the future in mind, encouraging composting, rainwater collection, wildlife-friendly planting, and reducing waste wherever we can.
- Sharing – From swapping seeds and surplus crops to lending tools and advice, we believe that everything grows better when it’s shared.
- Growing together – Our plots bring together people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience. We learn side by side, celebrate successes, and laugh about the wonky carrots.
About the Site
Our allotment site is home to around 76 individual plots of various sizes, from small starter beds to larger family plots. Many are divided into beds with paths for easy access, and you will spot everything from neat rows of onions to wild and wonderful cottage-style planting.
The site is largely level, with a main central path and smaller paths leading off to the plots. We work hard to keep the site welcoming, safe, and easy to navigate.
- Tool shed – A communal shed with shared tools for members to borrow, plus noticeboards with news and advice.
- Water points – Multiple taps and water troughs are dotted around the site so no plot is too far from a water source.
- Composting areas – Shared tipping area to help us recycle green waste
- Communal areas – A small seating area and grassy space where we gather for open days, plant sales, and the occasional summer barbecue.
- Wildlife corners – Untidy-on-purpose patches with logs, native plants, and bug hotels to support bees, birds, and other visitors.
How We’re Run
Our association is run entirely by volunteers who give their time and energy to keep the site thriving. The committee is elected each year at our Annual General Meeting, and any plotholder can put themselves forward or support others.
- Chair – Provides overall leadership, chairs meetings, and helps keep us focused on our mission and values.
- Secretary – Looks after membership records, meeting notes, and helps out the Chair when needed.
- Treasurer – Manages the association’s finances, plot rents, and fundraising income so we can plan ahead and invest in the site.
- Site supervisors – The friendly faces you’re most likely to meet on site. They welcome new members, offer practical help, and keep an eye on the condition and safety of plots in their area.
- Working parties & volunteers – Beyond the core roles, many members chip in at workdays, and additional maintenance. There’s always a way to get involved.
